Online Therapy in New York State

"Find your CONNECTION"

Effective therapy does not require a commute. It requires a consistent relationship, a safe space, and a therapist who takes the work seriously. All of that is available online.

I'm Gary Dillon, PhD, a licensed psychologist and the founder of Ally Psychological Therapy. I provide online (telehealth) psychotherapy for adults throughout New York State. Sessions are conducted via secure video and are structured to offer the same depth, continuity, and care as in-person work.

Therapy That Fits Your Life

New York is not a city that makes it easy to slow down. Between demanding schedules, long commutes, and the practical logistics of a busy life, getting to a therapy office can feel like one more thing on an already exhausting list. Online therapy removes that barrier.

You can have a session from your home, your office, your car, or wherever you have privacy and a reliable internet connection. You do not sacrifice quality to gain convenience.

Who Online Therapy Works Well For

Online therapy is particularly well-suited for:

  • Professionals with unpredictable or demanding schedules

  • Adults living outside of Manhattan who want access to a specialized provider

  • People for whom in-person therapy has historically felt exposing or inaccessible

  • Clients who travel frequently and need consistency across locations

  • Anyone who has simply found it difficult to make in-person therapy work with their actual life

What Online Therapy Actually Looks Like

Sessions are 45 minutes, conducted via a HIPAA-compliant video platform. You will receive a secure link before each session. All you need is a device with a camera, a stable internet connection, and a private space.

The therapeutic process itself does not change. We still build a relationship over time. We still explore what is underneath the surface. The work is the same. The location is more flexible.

Is Online Therapy as Effective as In-Person?

Yes. Research consistently shows that online therapy produces outcomes comparable to in-person therapy for most concerns, including anxiety, depression, burnout, relationship difficulties, and identity-related stress. For many clients, online therapy is actually preferable, because the privacy and flexibility allow them to show up more consistently.

Setting Up Your Space

Online therapy works best when you approach it with the same intention you'd bring to an in-person session. That doesn't require anything elaborate. It requires a few specific things.

Find a private space. This is the most important variable. You need to be somewhere you can speak openly without managing who might overhear you. A closed room is ideal. If that's not available, headphones help, and a white noise machine or fan outside the door can add another layer. Some clients take sessions from their car. Whatever works for your situation is what matters.

Give yourself a few minutes on either side. One of the real advantages of online therapy is that it fits into a busy schedule more easily than in-person sessions. One of its risks is that it can shrink into the schedule entirely: work meeting, therapy session, back to work, no transition. That compression makes it harder to arrive present and harder to process what comes up. Five minutes before and after is worth protecting.

Test your setup before the first session. Camera angle and lighting matter more than people expect. If the window is behind you, I'll be looking at a silhouette. Front lighting, or even just moving away from the window, makes a real difference in the quality of the connection. Check the microphone and internet connection while you're at it, so the first session doesn't start with technical problem-solving.

Sessions are conducted on a HIPAA-compliant, encrypted platform. Nothing is recorded. The legal protections that apply to in-person therapy apply here. If you want an additional layer of discretion, a private browser window prevents the session link from appearing in your browser history.

Privacy and Security

All sessions are conducted through a HIPAA-compliant, encrypted platform. Nothing is recorded. Your confidentiality is protected by the same legal standards that apply to in-person therapy. You can use a private browser session if you prefer an additional layer of discretion.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is online therapy as effective as in-person therapy?

Yes. Research consistently shows that telehealth/virtual therapy produces outcomes comparable to in-person therapy for a wide range of concerns, including anxiety, depression, burnout, trauma, and relationship difficulties. For many clients, the privacy and flexibility of online therapy actually improve consistency, which is one of the strongest predictors of progress. The format is different. The quality of the work is not.

How does online therapy work?

Sessions are 45 minutes, conducted via a HIPAA-compliant, encrypted video platform. Before each session, you receive a secure link. You click it at the scheduled time from wherever you are. The structure of the session is the same as in-person work. We talk. We explore what you're carrying. The therapeutic relationship develops over time in the same way it would in an office.

What do I need for an online therapy session?

A private space where you can speak openly, a reliable internet connection, and a device with a camera and microphone. That's it. Sessions run on a HIPAA-compliant platform, so no special software is required beyond a browser or the platform's app.

How do I set up a good space for online therapy?

Find a room with a closed door. If that's not possible, headphones help significantly, and a white noise machine or fan outside the door adds another layer. Give yourself five minutes before the session to transition out of whatever you were doing before. Check that your face is well-lit from the front rather than backlit by a window. Test your audio before the first session so the session itself doesn't start with troubleshooting.

Can I do online therapy from anywhere in New York State?

Yes. Sessions are available to adults physically located anywhere in New York State at the time of the session. You do not need to be in New York City.

Is online therapy confidential?

Yes. The same legal and ethical confidentiality protections that apply to in-person therapy apply to telehealth. Sessions are conducted on an encrypted, HIPAA-compliant platform. Nothing is recorded. If you want an additional layer of discretion, using a private browser window prevents the session link from appearing in your browser history.

Starting Is Simpler Than You Think

No commute. No waiting room. A private space, a reliable connection, and a device with a camera. That's what online therapy requires. The rest is the same work it would be in an office.
